Cups to grams converter for baking

Pick the ingredient, type the amount. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh very different things, so the converter never uses one number for all.

How it works

A cup measures volume. Grams and ounces measure weight. To go from one to the other you need the weight of one cup of that specific ingredient, which is why the converter asks what you are measuring.

Every weight comes from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart. King Arthur lists most items per cup and some per tablespoon, teaspoon or half cup. We scale those up or down in a straight line. For example, the chart gives honey as 21 g per tablespoon, so a cup (16 tablespoons) is 336 g.

Spoons and cups follow NIST Handbook 44: 1 cup is 8 US fluid ounces, 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and half a fluid ounce, so a cup holds 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons. An avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g.

When you convert grams back to cups, the answer is broken into the measuring cups and spoons you actually own, to the nearest quarter teaspoon. A real cup of flour still varies with how you fill it. The chart assumes flour that is fluffed, spooned into the cup and leveled.
